Job Description
The Director, Rail Operations provides leadership, oversight and coordination to the Company’s rail operations and major strategic initiatives. This role collaborates with Market, Area, and Corporate functions to develop rail strategy and identify third party partnerships that enable Republic Services to grow profitably in the marketplace. Further, the Director, Rail Operations leads the establishment, development and execution of best management practices for the Company’s existing rail operations.

Principal Responsibilities
Rail Development
• Develops rail strategies to improve the financial performance of markets.
• Responsible for business justification and financial and capital investment analysis of rail development projects.
• Leads and motivates internal and external functional expert teams to execute action plans for rail strategic development.
• Partners with Business Development on acquisitions and real estate transactions.

Rail Operations
• Establishes best management practices for rail operations.
• Develops reporting metrics and tools to facilitate accountability for rail operations.
• Coordinates with market operational leaders to execute rail initiatives.
• Routinely evaluates and analyzes new operating methods, equipment, and technologies to optimize rail operations.

• This position requires travel by air, car and/or other modes of transportation to cover markets nationwide.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent

• Minimum of 10 years of progressive responsibility in the rail or other asset-based transportation industry (Required).

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in strategy, project, infrastructure and/or real estate development (Required).

• Familiarity with the waste or environmental services industry.

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business, Engineering or a similar business- related field.

• Experience working with railroads, government agencies and lobbyists.

• Experience with public policy development and knowledge of regulatory frameworks.

• Excellent negotiation, leadership, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

• Strong financial acumen and ability to assess reasonableness of operating data and analyze results.

• Experience managing a project budget in excess of $5 million.

• Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks.
