Job Description
The Senior Manager, External Reporting is responsible for managing a combination of the following processes: external financial reporting requirements, general accounting, landfill, environmental, risk management, leases, legal, review of 401K audits and pension audits and a variety of technical accounting matters. The Senior Manager, External Reporting performs financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, general accounting and internal controls oversight, and assists with Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings and reporting processes. The Senior Manager, External Reporting is responsible for providing system and accounting support related to all aspects of the External Reporting Department’s activities and interacting frequently with the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Accounting Officer, Controllers Group, Internal Audit Department and field personnel.

Principal Responsibilities
• Assists with complex accounting areas by reviewing statement of cash flows, landfill models, environmental models, goodwill / intangible asset analyses, stock-based compensation, the company’s management incentive plan, and segment analyses.

• Manages monthly Corporate close process. Reports on results and reviews Journal entries and corporate balance sheet reconciliations monthly. This includes managing the accounting process for company’s captive risk insurance plan and may include accounting for landfill and environmental matters for the Company.

• Creates, generates and reviews reports used in the Company’s monthly close (generally using Essbase, Lawson and Excel), financial statements, footnotes, and other financial information to be filed with, or furnished, to the SEC, such as 10-Ks, 10-Qs, 8-Ks, annual reports, registration statements and proxy statements.

• Completes implementation and management of the new lease accounting standard (ASC 842). Prepares related reporting and disclosures.

• Assisting in mergers, acquisitions, due diligence or dispositions of companies including valuation of the opening balance sheet accounts.

• Assists in the management of the quarterly review and annual external audit of the Company’s financial statements.

• Coordinates and manages external auditor information requests and overall audit progress.

• Partners with Corporate Departments to execute inter-company projects and processes. Manages the corporate budget and forecast process.

• Provides training and accounting guidance to field controllers and other corporate departments relating to accounting matters.

• Drafts and updates the Company’s internal accounting policies and procedures.

• Completes, or assists in completion of, ad hoc financial analysis.

• Manages and develops professional staff.

• This position may require the following responsibilities related to landfill and environmental accounting maters:

o Travel by air, car and/or other modes of transportation up to 15% of the time.

o Responsible for analyzing landfill and environmental models and communicating factors that cause adjustments to the appropriate parties.

o Manages annual landfill and environmental model support review process.

o Manages/reviews/prepares information for quarterly landfill/environmental and legal meetings.

• Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.

• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or a related discipline (required).

• Minimum of 4 years of combined public (Big 4 or Tier II National) accounting experience or public company SEC reporting experience (required).

• Master’s degree in Accounting or Finance, Masters of Business Administration, or related field of study.

• Certified Public Accountant.

• Minimum of 1 year of experience in leading an External Reporting function that involved SEC disclosure and reporting, reconciliation, and accounting research.

• Experience working with Lawson and Essbase or similar general ledger systems, reporting tools, and database tools.

• Previous landfill or environmental accounting experience.

• Strong systems skills including Excel (including use of macros), general ledger, reporting tools, and database skills.
