Job Description
Republic Services is seeking an accomplished external communications professional to develop short- and long-term brand communications strategies to externally build the Republic Services brand. This professional also enhances the Company’s brand reputation through thoughtful media relations, event and social media activations, and other strategic communications practices to support or launch external Company programs and promotions.

Additionally, the role is responsible for the creation and the ongoing relationships with reporters, bloggers, key influencers in mainstream, online, and vertical publications, as well as the ongoing maintenance of the Company’s online news room.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Promotes, nurtures, and enhances a newly defined Republic Services brand, its programs and other important externally facing initiatives through strategic communications plans that include traditional and non-traditional media, community engagement activations, social media activations, etc.

  • Creates and implements a national proactive and reactive media relations plan. Creates and drives digital and social media programs.

  • Develops key messages for multi-channel/multi-media (digital publicity, releases, executive QAs, white papers, etc.) that succinctly differentiates the brand/Company.

  • Leads and effectively manages the social media efforts for the Company, working in collaboration with Marketing.

  • Effectively manages select outside agencies in order to advance the Republic Services brand with external influencers.

  • Partners closely and collaboratively with key departments to understand and then externally promote important Company programs and initiatives. Key partners include Marketing, Product Development and Sustainability.

  • Closely collaborates with the Director, Internal Communications & Creative Services to ensure coordinated and consistent messaging across all communications channels.

  • Creates engaging and differentiated brand events to support promotional activations with outside partners/brands.

  • Serves as a spokesperson, as appropriate.

  • This position may require travel up to 10% of the time.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 10 years of progressive corporate leadership experience in media relations, brand communication and/or social media. (Required).

  • Experience ideating, developing and implementing through cross-functional collaboration of annual company publications, including Summary Annual Report and Sustainability Report.

  • Strong media relations experience with the ability to create traditional and digital media campaigns that produce publicity and positive impact.

  • Extensive experience creating effective social media programs or special event activations that build into larger publicity campaigns.

  • Experience influencing and partnering with external audiences, such as communities, trade associations, environmental groups, government agencies and not-for-profit organizations.

  • • Strong background leading brand communications, including image, creative ideation and issues management.

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including excellent presentation and facilitation skills.

    • Proven ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively within an organization, across business units, functional departments, geographies and disciplines.

    • Experience successfully managing direct reports.
