Job Description
The Director, Organics Operations facilitates the establishment, development and execution of the Company’s policies and procedures for organics operations at existing facilities and new organics operations. Further, the role partners with Area Business Development and Municipal teams to ensure regulatory and customer needs are profitably addressed and met in specific prioritized and emerging markets. The Director, Organics Operations collaborates with and assists Market, Area, and Corporate functions to develop infrastructure strategy and identify third party partnerships that enable Republic Services to grow profitably in the marketplace.

Principal Responsibilities
Organics Operations

• Establishes operating policy, procedure, and best management practices for organics operations including current commercial compost facilities.

• Supports Market, Area, and Engineering teams with regulatory and compliance items or issues.

• Assists in development of market strategies to achieve mandated diversion targets while improving financial performance of markets.

• Coordinates with market operational leaders to ensure execution of operational initiatives and outcomes.

• Routinely evaluates and analyzes new operating methods, equipment, and emerging technologies.

• Works with Divisional teams to identify/develop end market opportunities.

• Coordinates with Area team on regional finished product sales strategy.

Project Management

• Prepares business justification for development of new organics infrastructure projects such as materials pre-processing, composting and digestion facilities; and assists with management of projects through the development cycle.

• Interfaces with controllership to develop pro-forma financial analysis and underlying business case(s).

• Leads and motivates internal and external functional expert teams to ensure timely and cost effective completion of projects.

• Partners with Business Development on acquisitions and real estate transactions.

Municipal Marketing

• Partners with municipal account managers, meets regularly with key decision-makers within assigned municipalities, state and federal agencies to enhance the Company’s position on organics solutions.

• Attends bid conferences, council, and/or board meetings as necessary. Prepares and delivers responses to RFPs and bids, as well as, sales presentations and follows up directly with key decision-makers.

• Maintains an awareness of market dynamics and competitors’ activity in areas where the Company conducts business. Attends industry trade shows and participates in local or state industry associations and trade groups.

• Meets with operations management as appropriate to coordinate sales, outreach, and service efforts for market place. Must be fully proficient at influencing public policy-making.

• Prepares and maintains all sales documentation (Blue sheets, Sales Funnel, Client Profile, etc.) by populating and maintaining the CRM system on a weekly basis. Acts as clearinghouse for all new municipal opportunities in organics post-collection.


• This position requires travel by air, car and/or other modes of transportation to cover markets nationwide.

• Bachelor's Degree in engineering discipline, business administration, and/or public affairs.

• Minimum of 5 years of general business experience, preferably in a capital intensive industry (required).

• Experience in strategy, project, infrastructure and/or real estate development.

• Waste or environmental services industry experience.

• Master’s degree in Business Administration or related degree.

• Experience managing a project budget in excess of $5 million.

• Experience managing a project team of professional functional experts.

• Experience working with government agencies and lobbyists.

• Knowledge of all facets of sales strategy and implementation including market research, customer prospecting, sales promotion and customer retention strategies.

• Strong financial acumen.

• Experience with public policy development and knowledge of regulatory frameworks.

• Knowledge of
reasonableness of operating data and analysis of results.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Strong interpersonal skills.

• Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks.
